Pepsi to be the Official Drink

Pepsi Cola has signed up an deal with the IPL to be the official and only drink of the IPL tournament. Pepsi paid $12.5 million dollars to become the exclusive drink of the 8 teams in the fray.

The sponsor money will be divided among the 8 teams

Delhi Daredevils Is A Well Balanced Team

Virendra Sehwag was disappointed when they could not bag star bowler Ishant Sharma. Ishant the bean pole fast bowler from Delhi was bought by Karnataka for a whopping $950,000 dollars. The Delhi Daredevils did not have that kind of money to buy Ishant but are very happy with the team they have got.

Sehwag said that the team is well balanced with the right mix of good batsman, bowlers. They also have the right mix of youth and experience. He said of the all the IPL team Delhi had the best fielding side.

The Delhi Daredevils boasts of the New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori and Pakistan captain Shoaib Malik.

Indian players in the team include Gautam Gambhir, Dinesh Karthik, Manoj Tiwary, Shikhar Dhawan, Mithun Manhas, Rajat Bhatia, Pradeep Sangwan, Mayank Tehlan, Yo Mahesh and Amit Mishra.

Tickets for IPL auction

It seems Ticketpro will be handling all the ticketing for the IPL. Not only there will be online booking of tickets, but there will be booking through mobile phones as well.

Let’s see how much this system will be transparent. With the amount of money involved in the league one can expect a lot nexus between franchise, sponsors, cricket association etc. Already there was a conflict between Kolkata franchise and Cricket Association of Bengal(CAB) regarding percentage of sharing of tickets for IPL matches at Eden Gardens. Similar conflicts can be expected at other venues also.

One more issue, how much the tickets will be priced. Will there be pricing based on demand and supply model similar airline ticketing system ? Let’s wait and watch. I have already heard many rumours that the minimum price of the ticket will be around 5000 INR ! Will tickets at all the venues be priced the same? Or will it be that tickets in Bangalore will be more expensive than in Jaipur (Since bored software engineers are more likely to pay higher prices to watch the matches).

The pricing of the tickets is very important, as the organizers have to make sure that the tickets are cheap enough for stadiums to be full to make the matches exciting, but expensive enough to make some profits. There are going to be 8 matches in a short amount of time, and this is very different from the usual routine of 1-2 ODI matches every 2 years. Lets see what the BCCI and it’s associates make of this opportunity.

Karmayudh ya Dhanyudh ?

The IPL cricketing extravaganza will see eight teams representing different cities slug it out in the Twenty20 format. The teams are franchisees which are owned by the biggest names in corporate sector and Bollywood, but what’s more interesting is how the money is going to flow in this mega-event!

Let’s have a look at revenues and expenses of this billion dollar league.

*BCCI’s share: The winning bidders will immediately have to pay only 10 per cent of the price they offered. For example Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Group has to pay a little over Rs 44 crore for the first year. But they have to make similar payments for the next 10 years.

*TV rights: The BCCI will also get TV rights money. The sum is Rs 4200 crore put up by Sony and World Sports Group. It is to be paid over 10 years.

*BCCI’s expenses: The main expense is raising prize money and that will be 16 per cent of the TV rights.

*Franchisees’ expenses: Apart from the winning bid, the franchisees will further bid for at least 16 players, whose minimum salary will be approximatrely Rs 20 lakh per season. They will also have to pay for training, coaches, support staff and their own promotions.

*Franchisees’ revenue: The Board keep 20 per cent of the money raised from TV rights every year and another 16 per cent kept aside. The remaining 64 per cent is distributed among the eight franchisees as their income. They can also raise revenue from embossing logos on T-shirts, but not the principal naming rights.

These large volume of the money indicate that the real winner (read happy) will be the franchise which makes the highest profit and may not be the team which wins the actual cricket battle, similar to football leagues in which Manchester United and Real Madrid are successful clubs because they make lot of profit. Cricket is probably, but not rightly, going to be in the sideline.

British football inspired Shah Rukh to think of owning a team

Five years ago Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan was watching a football match in London when the idea of owning a team crossed his mind. Shah Rukh realised that dream - though in cricket, not football - when he bought the Kolkata franchise of the Indian Premier League.

'I was watching English Premier League (EPL) in London when I went for a spinal cord surgery there. I thought if something like this could be started in football or hockey in India. So, when the IPL happened, I decided to join it,' Shah Rukh, who was in the city Tuesday to launch his Kolkata Knight Riders team, told IANS.

In February 2003, Shah Rukh underwent surgery on his spine in London's Wellington Hospital and since then, he has been visiting the city at regular intervals.

On his philosophy of work ethic, Shah Rukh said: 'My life has three simple tenets - work hard, don't think bad about others, and be honest to yourself.

'The point is, don't be caught up in small things, go for success. If you are a player, be like Roger Federer, and if you are an actor be like Amitabh Bachchan.'

Asked whether his son Aryan's love for the game is also one of the reasons to own a cricket team, he said: 'It's not only for Aryan. It's for the youth of the country. I do a lot of social work, but I want to do something for sports. I want Knight Riders to be an inspiration for the youngsters.'

Shah Rukh said if he had taken up cricket as a career, he would have been a wicketkeeper. 'I was a wicketkeeper when I used to play cricket.'

King Khan also went down memory lane and recalled the first cricket match he saw, an India-Pakistan encounter in 1979. 'My mother was a magistrate and she got tickets for us to watch that match at Ferozshah Kotla, in which Imran Khan made 32.'

On Preity Zinta hoping to see the Chandigarh and Kolkata teams in the final, he said: 'I wish her all the best and hope what she says comes true. But I will not make such tall claims. I hope we play good, entertaining, robust cricket and in the process if we reach the final, there is nothing like it.'

Virat Kohli goes to Bangalore

The Under-19 World Cup winning captain, Virat Kohli, has been bought by Bangalore, as a number of members of the Indian youth team that won the title in Malaysia went under the hammer in the second round of Indian Premier League auction here Tuesday.

Other Under-19 players who were picked by various franchises included left-arm seamer Pradeep Sangwan by Delhi, wicketkeeper Shreevats Goswami by Bangalore, Taruwar Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja by Jaipur, Sidharth Kaul and Iqbal Abdulla by Kolkata and Tanmay Srivastava and Ajitesh Argal by Mohali.

Among the foreigners the most prominent name was Misbah-ul-Haq, the Pakistan batsman, who was picked up by Bangalore Royal Challengers, who will also have Bangladesh left-arm spinner Abdur Razzak in the team.

The first England player to be auctioned, all-rounder Dimitri Mascarenhas, was bought by Jaipur's Rajasthan Royals, who have also signed up South African fast bowler Morne Morkel, Australian all-rounder Shane Watson and Pakistan left-arm fast bowler Sohail Tanvir.

Shah Rukh Khan-owned Kolkata Knight Riders bought Pakistanis Salman Butt and Mohammad Hafeez, while Mohali picked up Australians James Hopes and Luke Pomersbach.

From Aussies

Australia's Test players are set to be allowed to play in the lucrative Indian Premier League before preparing at home for the May tour to the West Indies, the players' union said Thursday.

The Australian Cricketers Association said Cricket Australia has indicated there will be no objection to Test stars Ricky Ponting, Brett Lee, Andrew Symonds, Matthew Hayden and Michael Hussey playing in the first 14-16 days of the six-week IPL tournament, which starts on April 18.

They will then be required back home for a team camp before the touring party sets off for the West Indies in the second week of May.

"I don't think there will be a problem," said ACA chief executive Paul Marsh. "Certainly based on our discussions with Cricket Australia to date I don't see any reason why they wouldn't be able to play in the IPL, assuming that there are no other commitments to Cricket Australia," he said.

CA spokesman Peter Young said the governing body was in the process of going through details and options, which include the possibility of practice matches before the West Indies tour.

"Our first priority is to ensure the team has appropriate preparation for the tour of the West Indies," he said.

Australia's opening tour match in the West Indies is scheduled to start on May 16 ahead of the opening Test in Kingston, Jamaica, on May 22.

This week's cancellation of the tour to Pakistan over security concerns opens a window in a crowded international schedule, allowing some Australian players to fulfill around one-third of their IPL contracts and collect pro rata payments.

Symonds is the highest paid Australian player, with a contract of $1.35 million for a full season. Lee is on $900,000, Ponting $400,000, Hayden $375,000 and Hussey $350,000.

IPL gets another sponsor

Car maker Hyundai has signed an exclusive advertising deal with Sony to telecast its ads during the IPL series. After Vodafone last week, Hyundai becomes the second associate sponsor to make a deal SET.

Though the deal amount was not mentioned it is estimated to be in range of 23 crores rupees.

With this agreement Hyundai will be the only automobile maker to be advertised during the 44 day tournament.

SRK says without sponsors all these won’t be possible

SRK said that without the support of sponsors of his team that include Belmont, Nokia, HDIL and Tag Heur it would be impossible for his company to have gone ahead with the IPL Kolkata - Kolkata Knight Riders team building, launching and promoting it.

He said as an actor he does not make that kind of money. Whereas the other teams like Mumbai Indians, Chennai Super Kings, Delhi Daredevils, IPL Hyderabad were all owned by big companies that had lot of financial backing.

Kolkata on the other hand is backed by a few individuals who don’t have that kind of money power said Khan. Winning and losing is part of the game but we will play to win said Badshah of Bollywood.

Bangalore Royal Challengers To Promote UB brands

Bangalore Royal Challengers is currently looking at promoting the United Breweries group brands, Mallaya said. They want to connect with the youth of India.

The team includes Rahul Dravid, Anil Kumble the local boys, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Misbah-ul-Haq, Dale Steyn, Zaheer Khan, Nathan Bracken, Jacques Kallis, Cameron White and Mark Boucher. Bangalore would have loved to have Robin Uttappa but they lost him to IPL Mumbai - Mumbai Indians during the first IPL auction.

Still, they have a pretty strong team with Praveen Kumar, Zaheer Khan and Anil Kumble as the bowling attack

Bangalore Royal Challengers Launched

In a glittering ceremony Vijay Mallaya owned Bangalore team was launched. The team will be known as the Bangalore Royal Challengers. It will be lead by former captain Rahul Dravid and has current captain Anil Kumble in its ranks. Jacques Kallis of South Africa is the other star player of the team.

Former New Zealand captain Martin Crowe will be the chief cricketing officer for the outfit. The team colors will be red and gold.

IPL Advertising - Paying To Keep Competitors Out

A one-day cricket match has 6000 seconds available for advertising, a twenty20 match will have only 2000 seconds. So, if too many companies market the same products it going to be difficult for the viewers to appreciate any particular brand or product. So, Sony the owner of all telecast rights for the IPL has signed up deals with companies to provide exclusive advertising. No competitiors ads will be displayed. For this the companies will shell out around 7 crores each.

Vodafone has signed up such a deal with Sony. Vodafone chief says this is not to keep competitors out but rather have enough time to advertise for their own brand.

Mohali to have a Team Song Too

First, Shah Rukh Khan now Preity Zinta. Mohali will have a team song too. Sajid-Wajid have compose a song for the IPL Mohali team.

The song has been recorded by Bhangra King Daler Mehndi recentl

Mumbai Indians - Sachin at press

Sobriety was the soul of Sachin Tendulkar’s answers after he named the Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) franchise team as ‘Mumbai Indians’, posed for pictures in front of the crest resembling a Sudarshan chakra in motion with an outline of India and was named the captain of the team.

Tendulkar said Mumbai Indians was a well-balanced team, like most other teams in the DLF IPL Twenty20 competition to be played from April 18 to June 1.

The Mumbai Indians will sport ocean blue, to which neither the BCCI nor IPL has objected, as its official team colour.

“I will get an opportunity to lead, plan strategy and provide excitement to the fans. The IPL is going to be a super hit. It will be an evening out for the family. And, it’s a privilege for me to lead the Mumbai Indians,” he said.

Tendulkar said the Mumbai Indians would have a good combination of seniors and youngsters and would be looking forward to whip up support from the followers of the game in Mumbai.

“I want Mumbaikars to support Mumbai Indians. We will play in the right spirit.

“Thirty years ago, one-day cricket provided all the excitement, 30 years later I will be happy to say I was part of the inaugural IPL and how all the players enjoyed playing it.

“I wish all the franchise teams and players my good wishes and hopefully there will be plenty of entertainment. It provides plenty of spills and thrills in three hours. It’s a game for the 5-year-old and the 80-year-old, and students don’t have to bunk school or college,” he said.

Finally asked about his availability for the home series against South Africa, he said: “As far as I am concerned, I am fit.”

IPL Ground Rules

Each IPL squad must have minimum of four under-22 players

Each Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise squad must have a minimum of 16 players per squad, according the rules of the Twenty20 tournament starting April 18.
A squad can have a maximum of eight foreign players, but it can pick a maximum of four in the playing XI, as per the rules announced by the IPL council a day ahead of the players' auction here.
Each of the eight squads will consist of a minimum of four under-22 players. These players must be under the age of 22 years April 1 of the relevant season.
The auction rules stipulate that each squad should have a minimum of four catchments area players -- the under-22 players and the Indian national team players if so qualified can be counted for purpose of this rule.

The catchments areas are defined by reference to a player's registration with his local cricket association. They are:
* Mumbai (catchments areas Mumbai, Maharashtra and Vidarbha)
* Bangalore (Karnataka, Goa and Services)
* Chennai (Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Railways)
* Kolkata (Bengal, Jharkhand, Assam, Tripura and associate member Sikkim)

The minimum salary for under-22 players is $20,000 per year. For other Ranji Trophy and non-auction players, it is $50,000 per year.
Each franchise must spend a total of at least $3.3m on players' fees for the 2008 season.

IPL Players - Cricketers Will Earn Like The EPL Football Players

Lalit Modi has said in a few years time the IPL players will earn amounts that will be greater than or same as what the English premier league players are presently earning. Due to the cap of 5 million dollars on the spending limit for the city teams the salaries did not sky rocket.
But in the next few years this limit will go and when free market economics take over the IPL players will earn sums that will match any football player in England. Cricket will no longer be the poor cousin.
When the issue of India dominating world circket was raised - Modi said for over a 100 years India has been at the receiving end of the world and now if the time has come for India to unleash her potential so be it. We are not shying away from our new status

IPL Is Bigger Than Kerry Packer Revolution

Ali Bacher the man who brought South Africa back into the cricketing fold and successfully helped them participate in the 1992 World Cup and has been guiding South African cricket for a long time has this to say on the IPL. It is bigger than the Kerry Packer Revolution and its popularity and the kind of money being poured by the franchisees who are all hard-headed businessmen only proves how big it is going to be.
India is now the new power center of cricket. It’s good that cricketers are getting paid good sums of money.

IPL Players Relationships Will Improve

Adam Gilchrist, one of the most loved and respected cricketers of the present era, hopes that playing in multi-cultural teams will help players to better understand each other and their overall relationships will improve.

Gilchrist feels that the present India-Australia series off-field power-play and other side issues have taken their toll on the cricketers and there is feeling that all is not well in the world of cricket.

IPL Hyderabad team will feature both Gilchrist and Andrew Symonds the man who can’t seem to keep out of controversy this season.

Sony Ropes In Vodafone

Sony the main holder of all broadcasting and telecasting rights for the IPL for the next 10 years has roped in Vodafone to be a presenting sponsor for the DLF-IPL tournament.

The other sponsors on board the for IPL include Pepsi Co India, Hyundai and Nokia as associate sponsors.

Sony is looking for other presenting and associate sponsors and is in talks with several companies for the same.

Michael Clarke Puts his Father Before IPL

Michael Clarke will one of the few high-profile Aussies not playing in the IPL. The reason - his father who is battling Cancer. Clarke would like spend time with his ill father as he is recovering from chemotherapy and radiation treatment. Clarke has said he might take part in the future editions of the tournament but right now his family - mother, sister and father were his priority.

He fully supported the IPL and wished it all the success. He hoped the people of India would understand his decision to stay out

IPL 160 crore to be spent on ADVERTISEMENT

A huge campaign to popularize IPL in the country is being planned. Across the country starting next month television channels, newspapers and the Internet will become the target of ads by both the IPL and the franchisees. The focus will on regional channels and newspapers as they want local loyalty for the local cities. Hold on tightly as the tidal wave advertising is set to hit next month.

The ads will run first in India and then globally. WSG and BCCI have roped top advertising agencies for these ads and they plan to be creative and fun and aim to make IPL a prime entertainment and sports brand.

IPL Mohali: Preity Zinta Sad About Not Winning Harbajan Singh

Harbajan Singh will not be playing for his home team. He will be playing for far-away Mumbai and that has left one beautiful lady very disappointed. Preity Zinta owner of Mohali team was keen on Bhajji but he slipped through her fingers and Mumbai bagged him.
Zinta said that it will not affect her team’s chances in the IPL. They will surely win as they had the right balance of cricketers.

IPL Players Balance

The IPL franchisees in their bid to get at some players have spent tremendous amounts of money. For example while Symonds went for more than a million his compatriot and Captain with a much better record went for less than half a million. Both Symonds and Ponting don’t have much say in what happened in far away Mumbai but it still leaves a bitter taste in some mouths when a Anil Kumble gets half of what new comer with 2-3 tests under his belt gets nearly a million.
This is the first ever auction for cricketers and markets were definitely skewed by considerations like marketability and colorful personalities but eventually it is hoped that better judgement will prevail and antics and histronics will not be encouraged.
I would surely not go to watch a Sreesanth make a fool of himself nor Harbajan dancing to the pavilion after taking a Ponting wicket. It devalues the game and makes a mockery of the gentleman’s game.

IPL for Women Cricketers

BCCI is reportedly considering a league similar to IPL for women’s cricket. Women cricketers have done India proud on numerous occasions. They have scored tons of run both at home and away, they have won many championships. But for all that nobody watches women’s cricket and nobody support India women’s cricket. Only in recent years has sponsorships and advertisements have come their way. Mandira Bedi of Shanti fame has taken up the cause of Women’s cricket in a big way. In some part due to her efforts and the women’s cricket authorities sponsorships came to Indian women’s cricket team. In a final recognition of the strides that women’s cricket made on world stage the BCCI took over the administration of Women’s cricket and made it part of bigger scheme things in India and abroad. Now, they are thinking about a Indian Premier League for women which should be good for women cricket overall.

Three Bouncers an Over

A job description for modern fast bowlers could read: Optimistic young men required to bowl 10 overs in one-day internationals. Must play the supporting role to the batsmen, who are the major stars in ODIs. Must be prepared to bowl a predictable speed, line and length. Need to possess the unflappable temperament of a Buddhist monk and the personality of a mute sheep. Must not be afraid of public humiliation. Must be prepared to travel a long way, like the cricket balls you bowl after the batsmen connect.

It's time to even up the ledger. Let's face it — restrictions on short-pitched bowling were initially brought in to stop the mighty West Indian bowling battery of the 1980s bouncing hell at every sorry batsman. The rule is outdated — there are no attacks like that these days.

By relaxing the bouncer restrictions, it provides more options for faster bowlers and makes the game less predictable for batsmen, who now know the ball is going to pitch in the "Corridor of Certainty" — on a good length around off stump. It's time to turn that Corridor of Certainty into the "Avenue of Apprehension" by allowing more bouncers. It's a win-win.

From a bowler's perspective, a subtly quicker bouncer can unsettle the batsman or dismiss him altogether — a mistimed pull shot will often fly to a fielder.

From a batsman's perspective, a badly executed bouncer is manna from heaven for someone such as Ricky Ponting, who is proficient square of the wicket, and can cut, pull and hook with reckless abandon. Again — more entertainment for the crowd in those flat middle overs.

BATTING TEAM TO CALL ONE FIVE-OVER POWERPLAY

Since power plays were introduced to one-day internationals, teams have generally used them consecutively in the first 20 overs. Essentially, all this rule has really done is extend the traditional fielding restrictions from the 15th over to the 20th over. Boooooring.

Let's get the International Cricket Council to take a leaf from our own domestic 50-over competition, where after the first compulsory 10-over powerplay, the bowling team and batting team each can call one five-over powerplay.

We have seen in the past couple of years that the bowling team will take its powerplay somewhere between overs 10 and 20.

However, batting teams have been using it at the compulsory ball change after the 35th over and we have seen teams score up to 60 runs in that period.

This rule allows for more attacking cricket. Batsmen are more inclined to play bigger shots to maximise the rule that only three men can be outside the 30-metre circle. The batsmen see the opportunity for boundaries, and as a result, the chance for wickets increases. With batsmen looking to attack more the chances of seeing boundaries increases, but for the fielding team, chances of wickets increases.

Suddenly, varying tactics and intrigue come in to play.

IPL Mumbai Confident Of Pulling Crowds

IPL Mumbai franchise owner Reliance has said that with the right marketing large crowds will fill the stands in the IPL tournament. All said and done the IPL is a domestic tournament with 8 cities in India participating. So, when the long established Duleep and Ranji trophies hardly get a few hundred specators will more come for IPL?

The Reliance Retail Chief R. Balanchandran, said with all due respect when was the last time any thing done to promote these domestic tournaments. Not one bit. So, how can you expect crowds. But the IPL will be a compressed calendar cricket tournament featuring top talent from every part of the world and you can expect a whirlwind of promotion from all stake holders and the crowds will pack the stands particularly after the recent success of the Indian team in major tournaments - tri-series in Australia and under-19 world cup.
